"Leather Cover for Kindle - Great product - Overpriced" 2009-09-01
By T. Panlilio (USA)
I love the product. The sleek look. It makes me comfortable carrying my Kindle around, because it has the look for a simple notepad. I like the way the Kindle attaches to it very securely at the spine, and the magnet inside the front. An impovement to it would be securing the kindle a little better to the back of the cover so that it doesn't "pull" up when opening the cover.

This all said, I think it is overpriced and would like to see that modified.

"Easy to use, easy to see, convenient" 2009-08-31
By Cynthia L. Gitz (Berwick, PA United States)
Great inovation! No more lugging books in the luggage and chewing up my 50# weight limit when traveling. Easy to use, even for the beginner. For the 'non-techinical' individuals, please dont'be afraid to give this 'book' a chance. If you are a serious reader, you will pay for this book very quickly with the money you will save on the printed versions (and I always buy the hardcover so will save mega $$$).

"Great protector but a bit too heavy" 2009-08-31
By Antonio Rodriguez (Miami, Florida United States)
The leather protector does what it's suppose to do, it protects the kindle when you are traveling with it, the one fall back is the extra weight and thickness of it.

"I bought the Kindle DX because..." 2009-08-31
By Caregiver Mom (MD)
my husband is blind and our family gave him the Kindle DX for his birthday; I subscribed online through Amazon.com to the Washington Post so he can use "text to speech" and listen to his newspaper everyday. We are Washington Post subscribers for over our 54 years of marriage, plus before that time, my husband lived in DC and subscribed to the Post for years.

I set up the Kindle Dx and he can listen everyday and loves it!

Thank you!

 "DX Leather Cover" 2009-08-30
By john summers (hilton head island, SC, USA)
I just received A Kindle DX Leather cover for my new Kindle. I love it. It sloses magnetically, and protects the device from dirt, dust and abrasion. It has a good 'feel' and adds very little to the

weight and thickness of the Kindle.

It is a very practical e-book reader. The only concern is how to convert your stuff to the kindle extension (file format) in an efficient way without loosing the original text format. In general, I highly recommend the Kindle DX for you.

"Very Happy with the DX" 2009-08-30
By Purplemuzzle (Las Vegas)
I upgraded from the Kindle 1 to the DX... very glad I did, the bigger screen does make a difference for me. And the wide screen mode works well when needed for displaying certain docs and pictures... mostly I don't need the wide screen but it's nice to have the capability. I agree with some of the other reviewers that when holding the reader with the right hand sometimes the next page button is not located high enough...center of gravity requires you to hold with one hand higher up than the button... but still.. it's a great reader. I've never had any problems with my Kindle 1 and trust this will be just as reliable. Even though it's bigger, it's still just as mobile, I take it when flying, waiting in the doctors office, to read in bed, even in the bathtub.

 "I can read again" 2009-08-30
By Siegfried Schlass (portland, Oregon)
For years I had difficulty reading books due to a loss of visual acuity .. this resulted in not being able to participate in a pleasure I enjoyed greatly when I was younger...now with this Kindle DX which I have had in my possession now for about a month, I have returned to being an avid reader ... some points ... the pronunciation of the text to speech is a bit choppy and has no speed control,.. so it needs some work .. but I've also found that when I read while listening with my earphones on (text to speech), I've actually improved comprehension and my rate of reading ..it's difficult to rate this product properly .. rate it against what? ..it has no comparable product on the market .. all I can say is that it has made a difference in my ability to read books and for the initial cost, although hefty, it was worth it and I truly expect that this technology once made cheaper will be as systemic in our society as microwave ovens.. also..I think it's internet access function although a bit clumsy and in need of some work, none the less makes this product just outstanding.

"It's inexpensive compared to most--but it shows it" 2009-08-30

I like the way it holds the kindle. I think it will offer fine protection. I like reading the kindle WITHOUT a case.

Still, I expected it to be a little nicer.

I'd probably buy it again.

"Sturdy Convenient Protection for DX" 2009-08-17
By Roy Lynn Godkin (Beaumont, Texas United States)
I purchased the OCTO Faux Leather Slip for my new DX and I am as happy as can be. The DX fit is snug enough to be protective and still allow easy access. I am not interested in attracting a lot of attention to this expensive device and this cover looks like a lot of other leather holders. I have enjoyed being able to sit my DX on top of the cover when at a fast food restaurant which protects it from moisture and food. I leave the keyboard side to the opening allowing me to charge the DX and/or link it to my computer without removing it from the OCTO. Some have complained about an odor. Yep, it takes a few hours for the odor to go away, but don't let that small issue derail your consideration of this cover. Any new belting leather (which this isn't) or regular finish leather (which this might be) can have a similar odor. It is study, it is convenient, it protects the DX and the price is about right.

 "Surprisingly impressed" 2009-08-06
By LYos (OC, CA)
This cover didn't have a horrible smell like others have. My kindle is snug inside and doesn't slide out on its own yet smoothly pulls out. It's slim and doesn't add much to the size so I can slip it into my purse or tote with ease. It looks good too. I half expected it to look like cheap "pleather" but was pleasantly surprised. it doesn't protect my kindle as i read it since i have to remove the cover completely as i read but for storage when it's not in use it's great.

"Very good at what it does" 2009-08-02
By Jason M. Hendon (Florida)
This case isn't as advance as the book cover looking ones. It doesn't attach to the kindle in anyways, its simply something to slide it into for basic protection. If thats what you want, then this is perfect. It feels solid and I am pretty sure it would help protect your kindle if you dropped it while in the slip, though I had no interest in testing this. The color is pretty decent, its not bad to look at and it doesn't look cheap like some others do. The logo from the company is hard to see to so its not to bad.

Its a cheap, and effective cover for your kindle. If you just want a simple cover and dont mind touching your kindle then this is a pretty good option for you.

"Amazing case; should have shipped with the Kindle DX" 2009-07-16
By Doug201 (New York City, NY)
This case is spectacularly good. It is very sturdy, and holds the Kindle DX firmly so that it does not slide out accidentally, yet it is lined with a very soft material that looks to be padded where the screen touches it. The case is not much larger than the Kindle and it does not add any appreciable bulk. I don't go anywhere without this case since receiving it.

I think the case was worth its price, in peace of mind. I still think the price, however, is giving the manufacturer an enormous margin, though, and could stand to be reduced.

Others have remarked that the case smelled. While I noticed this the first day I had the case, within a day or two there was no more odor. It had something of the "new car smell" to it, and I did not find it unpleasant. I would not avoid purchasing this wonderful case for fear of any odor.

My only complaint is that I would have preferred a black version, instead of a brown one.

 "Why take a chance?" 2009-08-29
By Gerald (rural Minnesota)
I ordered one of these and while it was in shipment I read about class action suit to try get compensation from Amazon for th8is case as it caused a lot of broken screens on people's Kindles. I don't understand why they sell a product with such risk of damaging an expensive piece of electronic equipment. After all I bought the case to try protect the Kindle, not to run risk of breaking the screen if someone opened the case wrong. I returned it right away and decided a netbook travel case would work better with less risk of damage to the Kindle.

 "great cover/protector" 2009-08-29

"Kindle DX Cover-Good but could be better" 2009-08-29
By Anthony M. Bauer (Okemos, MI)
I have owned the Kindle DX Leather Cover for about two months. It was a good investment because I needed to protect of face of my Kindle. However, the problem with the Cover is: when the back part of the cover flips to the left, it puts a force on the hinge that bends and breaks the left half inch frame on the Kindle. My solution has been to tape the back cover to the Kindle.

 "Great Product!" 2009-08-29
By Avid Learner (Missouri, USA)
Love it!. Only wish there was a way to organize my books within my Kindle DX like some sort of folder system. That would make searching for a particular book easier. Say, for instance, I wanted to create a folder for mysteries, romance, subject matter, etc. That would make it perfect.

 "Doesn't Work" 2009-08-28
By M. Thomas Collins (Tennessee)
I can't use this cover. It doesn't work. First it damages the Kindle separating the front and back of the unit and in doing so it bends the cover attachment probes that insert into the Kindle.

From reading other reviews this supposedly happens only when you incorrectly open the cover. Frankly I have been unable to find a correct way to open the cover!

It does not serve its intended purpose and I do not recommend this product.

 "DONT GO BIGGER.....K2 IS BETTER...GO BETTER!!!!!!" 2009-08-28
By Watercolor Lilly
DONT WASTE THE MONEY ON THE DX!!!!! I ORDERED ONE OF EACH TO COMPARE. HERE'S WHY I SAY THIS:

1. DX TO BIG AND "TOP HEAVY", YOUR WRISTS TIRE AFTER HOLDING IT FOR VERY LONG [ACTUALLY ONLY ABOUT 1 MINUTE AND I AM A GOLFER WITH STRONG WRISTS].

2. THE SCREEN IS BIGGER [NOT SURE THIS IS AN ADVANTAGE] BUT NOT ANY BRIGHTER THAN THE KINDLE2.

3. THE LARGER SCREEN SEEMS ATTRACTIVE HOWEVER YOUR EYES GET TIRED OF "TRACKING BACK AND FORTH" ACCROSS THE WIDE SCREEN AND YOU WILL END UP NARROWING THE TYPE AREAS, I.E. INCREASING THE MARGINS. THEY WILL END UP BEING NOT MUCH BIGGER THAN THE K2 PAGE IMAGE SIZE!

4. PORTABLILITY OF THE K2 IS MUCH MUCH BETTER.

5. THE K2 HAS A "NEXT PAGE" BUTTON ON BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES. THE DX ONLY HAS ONE "NEXT PAGE" BUTTON ON THE RIGHT.

6. ROTATING SCREEN GETS CONFUSED AND SLIGHT MOVES CAUSE IT TO ROTATE. IN ADDITION, WHILE THE SCREEN IS ROTATED YOU HAVE TO "TAKE YOUR HAND OFF THE SIDE OF THE KINDLE TO HIT "NEXT PAGE". THIS MIGHT SEEN LIKE NO BIG DEAL BUT ........ IF YOU ARE AN AVID BOOK READER, YOU WILL STILL WANT THAT "BOOK IN HAND" FEEL AND WITH THE K2, YOU JUST PRESS THE "NEXT PAGE" BUTTON LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER YOUR LEFT OR RIGHT THUMB....... NO LETTING GO OF THE "BOOK"!

7. THE SUPPOSEDLY "NEW PDF FEATURE" IS NOT THAT MUCH DIFFERENT THAN ON THE K2 AND IN FACT IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE WOULD USE THEIR SMALL NOTEBOOK COMPUTER FOR OR A BLACKBERRY. LET'S FACE IT! KINDLE IS FOR GETTING ALL OF THOSE BOOKS THAT ARE SCATTERED AROUND THE HOUSE, STACKED ON THE NIGHTSTAND, DESK OR ANY OTHER PLACE THEY SEEM TO ACCUMULATE. MY HUSBAND IS SO THANKFUL HE LO LONGER TRIPS OVER ALL OF MY BOOKS!DID I MENTION THAT THE WIDE RANGE OF FONT SIZES DOES NOT REQUIRE ME TO LOOK FOR MY READING GLASSES IF I FORGET AND LEAVE THEM UPSTAIRS OR WHEREVER?

BEST OF ALL I LIKE BEING ABLE TO SWITCH FORM BOOK TO BOOK OR FROM BOOK TO TODAY'S NEWSPAPER [GREAT FOR READING THE NEWS WHILE YOU ARE OUT OF TOWN].

HOPE THIS HELPS AND YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY MADE YOUR PURCHASE!!!

"Very Happy with the Kindle DX" 2009-08-28
By A. Castaldi (Sylvania, OH)
I have had the Kindle DX for a couple of months and I am very happy with it. I did a lot of research before deciding to buy a Kindle and deciding on the DX. Some of the reasons I chose the DX are that I would be reading the USA Today on it (newspapers are better on DX), I do not travel much so the (I believe) very reasonable size would not be an issue, and the PDF capabilities. USA Today is great on the DX, the size is such a non-issue that I do not think I would even like the smaller screen of the Kindle 2 and the PDF support is very useful. A few of the features (not necessarily exclusive to the DX) that I like are:

1) All of my reading in one place/ one thing to take with me to have anything I want to read available.

2) The convenience of the Kindle DX has definitely increased the amount I read.

3) Can see it as a very useful tool for work if I choose to convert certain docs to PDF so I have them with me at all times.

4) Smooth integration with Amazon's Kindle store. The seamless shopping and purchasing experience is very similar to iTunes.

5) Very easy on the eyes. The digital ink and the large DX screen make for a very enjoyable experience.

6) Very long battery life. Having to either recharge often or be near an outlet would be a big hassle.

7) Top notch customer support. I did have an issue of a book that I purchased not loading to my Kindle. I called after 10pm EST, and the rep was knowledgeable, courteous, and quick to fix my issue.

8) Way more convenient than reading something on my laptop.

Only negative I might run into:

* A better way to organize the content on the Kindle. I have not reviewed what appear to be the limited options for addressing this but it could be any issue as content increases.

I also feel the need to address a couple of the common complaints I see. I am not some Kindle fan boy, just a fairly logical thinker that does not understand some of the complaints:

* It is too expensive - it certainly isn't cheap, but if it was TOO expensive you would not have purchased it. The price is clearly stated - not a surprise. If it is too expensive, someone can consider the Kindle 2 or online

content on their computer.

* It is too big - clear dimensions are provided. It is a simple trade off - my iPhone (for example) is much smaller, but not very enjoyable to read on. I do not feel like I am holding a chalkboard when I am reading, it is

smaller than a magazine.

* It does not come with a cover - did it state that it came with one?

Some people seemingly expect too much from everything. Something does what it says, but it is often not enough for people.

The one thing that someone definitely should consider before buying one is if they truly love the feel of a book in their hands and the process of flipping pages as they read. This is a legitimate concern. I, on the other hand, prefer a button instead of a page turn, not having my kids lose my book mark and having all of my content in one place.

 "Wow, worth every nickel!" 2009-08-28
By Book Girl 72 (New England)
I can't believe it does everything it says!

Being able to read books, magazines, blogs and news wires while having the functionality of highlighting, bookmarking, annotating, looking up definitions, search the web, buy new books very inexpensively (without having to wait for the paperbacks), listen to my favorite background music while reading and carry everything with me is INCREDIBLY GREAT! Oh I didn't forget the best features of being able to carry my work documents in .pdf format, listen to audio books, turn on text-to-speech and the ability to view the screen in portrait and landscape mode!

Everyone who sees mine wants one. Don't believe all the people who say you'll never get use to it! Within the first couple of pages you forget you're not reading a book. The e-ink technology is so much better than looking at a computer screen. Being able to walk out the door without having to decide which book to bring with me is very liberating! Oh and amazon doesn't take books away that you purchase, ever. If you get a book for free, then you didn't purchase it did you? (Yeah the free books are great too!)

I can't wait for a color version so I bought this one and will buy the color version as soon as it becomes available!

 "Just about Perfect!" 2009-08-28
By D. C. Harris
Love the Kindle DX! This device does exactly what it claims to do, and does so very well! There's definitely room for improvement, but amazing nonetheless.

For those requesting a touch-screen, better internet capability, color images, faster page turning, etc., just keep in mind that this is a book reader, not a computer or PDA. And therefore, in my opinion, less is more. The size is right, the screen quality is outstanding, and things like the free wireless downloading of books are all strong selling points. If I want to connect to the internet or snap photos, I'll use another device to do so.

That said, here's a list of Pros, Cons, and suggested Do's & Don'ts.

Pros:

> Extensive collection of books and content, with more lower priced titles than others

> Sleek, solid, well-designed device

> Larger screen size, perfect for reading, excellent viewing quality

> Landscape view

> PDF support

> Free wireless downloads, w/o the need for contracts or computer!!!

> Mac compatible (iPhone/iPod Touch app also available); Unlike Sony, this proves that Amazon is in touch with what people are using these days

> Ability to shop the Kindle store from your backyard or a hotel room

> Overnight wireless delivery of popular newspapers

> Cool layout, design, and packaging (Once Upon a Time...)

Cons:

> Expensive (I think $399 would be a more realistic selling price for the DX)

> Poorly-designed leather case (I chose not to purchase this accessory in fear of it damaging the screen as reported by several others)

> Amazon's previous decision to remove content from Kindle devices w/o user's permission; Here's hoping they learned from that one

Do's:

> Improved way to organize content using folders or additional categorization

> The ability to browse books by cover

> Remove the DRM

> Ability to archive a user's book collection on their own computer instead of just on Amazon's servers

> A way to permanently delete a purchased title, if so desired

> Book revisions made available for a nominal fee (similar to Apple's popular "Complete My Album" or "iTunes Plus" upgrade programs)

> Option to "Sign Out" or "Buy" books. (i.e. $9.99 to purchase and retain the book, $1.99 to sign out for 10 days, after which the lender could choose to renew or purchase the book for an additional fee. Otherwise, it is automatically deleted at the end of the sign-out period.

> Improved battery life

Don'ts:

> NO ads in purchased books!!!! Save the ads for the storefront or free books, but not in books that I purchased.

> NO charge for wireless downloading of books... ever! This was a major selling point for me and should NOT change - if it does, the relationship is over. (If amazon wishes to collect wireless fees for their 3G service, perhaps they could do so from all those individuals who wish to use the Kindle as an internet device instead of an e-book reader)

> NO touchscreen - I prefer my screen smudge-free and clearly readable.

> NO books over $9.99 (w/ perhaps the exception of some of the more expensive text books). Kindle books should remain significantly lower priced than their hardcover counter-parts, or what's the point.
