 "Kindle DX" 2009-11-11
By P. Sheeran
I have had the DX for 30+ days now and completed one book. I like the way I was able to set the font size to suit my likes. I find this way I read faster. I did notice some slight errors in the scanning of the book and also on the book I am now reading. Errors of words missing or words repeated and some inapproprate spacing within words. Barring this slight transcription problem, I really like the DX due to it's size and ease of handling.

I adore this product. It's everything I had hoped it would be and more. No more hunting through the house for the book I want to read. No more dog earing pages because I don't have enough bookmarks. No more waiting days to get to the bookstore to buy a book I want to read.

It's like having a magical tablet.

By Pamela Malone (LEONIA, NJ)
I am ultra happy with my new Kindle DX. I'm reading all the time now, which is TV's loss. I notice I read faster, probably because page turning is just a click. Downloading is a second. It's great to read the NEW YORK TIMES, especially the Entertaimaint section without having to wade through pages of ads. The telephone help-line has helped me the 3 times I couldn't figure something out myself(the Kindle User's Guide has a lot of flaws!)Reading is fun again!

 "Kindle DX "Read on"." 2009-11-10
By Dennis Lockhart aka B.G. George Crook (In the sticks North of Phoenix, AZ)
I originally purchased the first edition Kindle; it was great but the small screen and my not so good eyes didn't get along. I upgraded to the DX and love it. It travels in my brief case or my backpack wherever I go. I am in the process of retiring and will live in and travel by RV. It does not have a lot of room for my extensive book collection. Luckily, many of my favorite books are available in the Kindle version so they can conveniently travel with me.

The DX is a little heavy for bed time reading but is a great laptop and tabletop reader.

"Great, but still a Work In Progress." 2009-11-10
By Josiah Ethington (Everett, WA)
I purchased the amazon kindle DX as soon as it came out, and I have been very happy with it. I currently have over 100 novels on it (most of which I got for free!) and have enjoyed it immensly. The battery life is super(up to 2 wks with the wireless off). The screen is easy to read, its light and very portable, quite durable (I've been rather hard on it, and no problems yet).

but to the cons - My major complaint is that there isnt much of a way to sort the titles you have on the kindle - you can't organize them however you want, you can only sort by title, author, or which ones you've read or added most recently.

As far as the expiramental features - the web browser is neat, but its quite slow at loading pages, and drains the battery at a tremendous rate (only a couple of hours will deplete it entirely). Mostly usefull for looking stuff up on wikipedia (which i think is an awesome feature).

The MP3 player - Good speakers, adequate volume, but not having any control whatsoever over what plays, except for a skip track function that you have to push 2 buttons at the same time for? Might as well have just left that out, almost...you can't even see what music you have loaded on your kindle unless its plugged into a comp via usb port.

The TTS system (text to speech) - Is not supported by many authors, and has some problems with pauses, like, it doesnt pause as much between paragraphs as it does between sentences (or even as much as other words sometimes).

Other than those, I really love my kindle, and once those are fixed (which I personally think should be possible via a firmware update...but that may be too much to hope for) I'd give it 5 starts, but for now, 4 is all it gets.

This is my first review ever on Amazon, but I had to state how much I am enjoying my Kindle DX! I had looked at them while browsing Amazon but thought I would not want such a thing. However, that all changed when one of my friends brought her Kindle DX to Book Club! Wow, seeing it in person made me want one so badly! I talked about it so much that my family bought me one for my birthday! I love reading on it and downloaded a book while I was sitting on the beach--just awesome! I heart my Kindle DX!!!!!

I own several readers at the present time including the Kindle 2 and two sonys. The DX is an excellent machine but I do find my self using the Kindle 2 more ofter simply due to the portability. The DX (especially with the leather cover) is somewhat unwieldly and heavy to hold for very long. If you see well then the Kindle 2 will do about everything you need except for the native PDF files. I must say that for travel the Kindle 2 is my best bet. I use the DX some but probably can't justify the high cost of purchase when compared to the "2".

I recently read my first book. I love the option of reading or having it read to me. The Kindle DX is easy to carry on trips and is so convenient. I like the Kindle Store from Amazon also. It is so easy to use.

 "Viewing Landscape PDF Files" 2009-11-09
By G. Ashe (Sarasota FL)
I have just received my Kindle DX. It arrived a day earlier than expected, a pleasant surprise. I intend to use it to view PDF files created in Landscape format. I am a field service engineer servicing consumer electronics. Having all of my manuals in a light weight easy to carry form is preferable to carrying a stack of manuals.

I found the setup very easy. I dragged 130 files in a folder named Video to the Kindle via the USB cable. Disconnected the USB cable and turned on the Kindle DX.

NO Video folder. All 130 files appear on the home page. Adding some more files, an index of files, and a work order list to the Kindle, I found they too appeared on the home screen by in Random locations among the other files.

I opened a file and found the PDF document appeared as it would on my computer in grayscale as opposed to color, which was expected. The full page appeared in portrait mode. I rotated the Kindle DX to Landscape mode as this is how the manuals are formatted. The Kindle DX Zoomed the Image to fill the screen width as stated in the manual.

Now for the problem.

The bottom of the page is cut off. It appears if you select next page. If you are reading TEXT this is OK. I am trying to view block diagrams and electrical schematics. I cannot scroll the page to view the image. Going to the next page doesn't help. The bottom of the previous page is at the top and part of the next page follows.

I bought the Kindle DX in hope of finding a solution to having service manuals at my finger tips and for some 3000 others within the company I work for.

We presently call tech support to get the info we need in the field or carry a laptop computer. The Laptop is heavy, the batteries don't last long, and it takes a long time to boot Windows.

I can't see that the 2 problems I have a difficult to solve.

Add FOLDERS.

Add a PAN and ZOOM for PDF files.

I will be trying to use my Kindle DX next week to see if I can overcome these problems. If not I will be returning it for credit.

 "Ilove my Kindle DX!!!" 2009-11-08
By Melinda Paul (campton, NH)
I had been hesitant to buy a kindle, i am a very tactile person an I was nervous about the feel of the reader. It has been awesome, it took me about a day and a half to get used to turning the page. I kept trying to turn the reader over...LOL..

I wish new books came out faster, I read about a book a day and I have a hard time finding something new to read. I like that some of the older books are free, when I can't find anything new to read, I go and download a classic for free!

I have not had many problems with my DX, it did freeze on me once, but customer service walked me through resetting it and it was back up and running in less than 5 minutes

I am looking forward to the next generation of kindles, I think color readers are close on the horizon and hopefully the cost of the kindles will come down a bit or the cost of the books will drop. It is a pretty expensive addiction

I had given reading books, newpapers and magazines for several yeas due to severe macular degeneration. Books on Tape did not prove satisfactory as it took too long to download and listen to.

Kindle DX with its ability to enlarge type, spacing and words per page has proven to be ideal. i can read agoain and read at a quick pace. While I may need additional light source to clarify presentation, this is one terrific device for those who have given up reading for a similar reason. I have recommended this device to my brother-in-law kwho suffers from a similar affliction and he ls also a fan of DX after having struck out with the original Kindle.

I'm happy with my Kindle DX purchase, and I highly recommend the M-Edge case as an accessory. I love the ability to load my own PDF files. My improvement suggestions are the same as everyone else:

1. Needs update of OS to allow folders to organize files

2. Needs removable SD card for variety of content and ability to have more content

3. Needs replaceable battery (not a problem now, but I'm sure it will be).

As a lawyer, I would love to own this unit for business use. Two things are holding me back:

1) The price is still too high. DX charges a very premium price. This is OK, as long as your product is near perfect. The DX is still a work in progress and has many known kinks that need to be worked out;

I could probably even overlook the price but . . .

2) No file structure? Really? Device cannot be treated as a serious business or academic device without a file structure. I would plan to dump 1000+ pdf documents into Kindle on Day One. Without a file structure, I'll never be able to find them again.

4 stars, not 5 because lack of a file system.

The Kindle DX looks like a vast improvement on the original Kindle. But where is the file system? You are offering vast storage capacity with no way to organize the titles. Please add a file system! I like the Kindle DX. The increased display size and increased contrast of print to background are very attractive. This item is somewhat pricey, but I have a bad habit of buying books regardless of price. PLEASE ADD A FILE SYSTEM! What operating system are you using? I have written programs for the Palm Pilot and you can have a file system on that small device. Cell phones have a file system to organize different kinds of data. Please add a file system so I can buy one of these things. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ADD A FILE SYSTEM!

"It has just enough I need." 2009-11-07
By Valdemar Katayama Kjaer (Porto Velho, RO, Brazil)
Despite the fact it doesn't have native support for .doc and .html files, it's worst defect, I am very happy with Kindle DX because it is easy to use and it is "just enough".

I am used to very complex gadgets, but it is a good feeling to handle a so easy and useful e-reader. It is really expensive but for my purposes the price is worth.

In the future, I hope there will be a Kindle with color-screen, touch-screen, hand written notes, freehand drawing, faster navigation and with full support to the main formats of text and image files. And also with the possibility to increase the letters of a PDF document (a zoom button, maybe?).

By now, however, I am very, very happy (Kindle DX is far better than a computer screen to my eyes!!!)

I would also suggest a feature: integration to computers, handheld computers and tablets to load movies and color pictures at an internet library within servers of Amazon.com, so an e-book could indirectly offer color images and movies to the reader. In some areas, like medicine (my profession), people wont buy an e-book because the printed book has color pictures and sometimes a DVD with movies. The e-book would be more useful to medicine with this proposed feature.

I beg your pardon for my awful english. I am not a native english speaker.

"The Most Wonderful Device Ever" 2009-11-05

The Amazon Kindle DX brings a whole new degree of satisfaction to reading. It makes wonderful use of technology while keeping us linked to the age old written word. So what started out on stone tablets, now ends up on small white electronic tablets. The DX offers myriad wonderful features that enhance the reading experience.

In addition to all of the great features that the Kindle 2 possesses, the DX is a bit more student friendly with its ability to read PDFs; however, it's not a perfect technology yet. For instance, a better zooming feature would be nice for PDFs, but it is sufficient for academic reading. The bigger screen, allowing the reading of larger text without as many page turns, and, of course, the quick access to all your books culminates into a truly marvelous and utilitarian device. Amazon has developed a truly wonderful product in the DX, and I look forward to their future updates for it.
