"The Amazon Kindle DX - Not for the Vision Impaired" 2009-10-11
By SteveS (Cincinnati)
Several days ago I received the Kindle DX in a little box...that if dinged in the right place, would have resulted in hidden irreparable damage. The box is barely bigger than the Kindle. My box was unscathed, so with great anticipation, I opened it and remove the Kindle from the simple packaging. The Kindle is cradled inside of a thin molded cardboard container. It looked ok, so I plugged it in and turned it on. After it booted up, the screen showed my name on a letter from Amazon thanking me for purchasing it.

The DX looked and felt good. I could change text size and it could read the letter to me.

I then immediately loaded a PDF on it and found...that I couldn't do anything with a PDF, including text to speech. To use the politically correct terms, I am slightly visually challenged. So, if I wanted to increase the size of a PDF, the only option was to turn the Kindle sideways. That's it.

Next is the keyboard. Let's get real. What idiot in Amazon's design department needs to be fired? The letters on the keys are so small and light colored that even my fully sighted friends had problems using it.

As for the text to speech, the only options are two voices (male or female) and three speeds, and nothing else. Also, it is not easy or convenient to turn it on or off. Then if I turned the Kindle off, a picture would appear, but the thing kept reading and speaking. In fact, you cannot do anything with the Kindle while it is reading text.

The text to speech for the kindle still has a ways to go. It does not pause when it sees a new line, i.e. a title followed by a sentence. It just runs the lines together as if it were the same sentence. It pauses too long after each word or phrase in a comma delimited string. It sometimes misses the spaces between words and runs them together. It does use the correct inflection on a quoted phrase or sentence. There are other issues such as pronunciation.

It was hard get use to. I had trouble following and understanding what it was reading.

I have the AT&T text to speech on my 9 inch laptop and I have dozens of voices. It is much better at handling punctuation and pronunciation. There are many parameters I can change to configure it to match the book I am reading. But, this is on a laptop and reading or listening for hours on a long flight quickly runs the battery down. That's why I bought the Kindle. With a supplemental USB power source, I could listen on a flight from the US to China with no problem. But...

In the early days of radio, there were stations that sold or gave away radios that just tuned to their frequency. Later legislation was passed banning this practice, stating that all radios produced had to receive the entire bandwidth.

The Kindle costs $489.00, the cost of my small laptop with the same sized screen. I would have thought Amazon would have ironed out all the bugs before presenting it as an alternate solution. But, I guess they just want you to buy their books. The other features are there to appease you as you put almost $500 on your credit card. Now I have to return it. In doing so, I will only get back 85% of my money.

Moral of the story? Time for some legislation. ...and read all of the reviews, not just the good ones.

 "Kindle DX is amazing!" 2009-10-10
By R. Caron (Maine)
I initially purchased a Kindle DX for my wife. She wanted one to store reference material for her carrer as a Medical Care Professinal as well as for pleasure reading. Set-up was quick and easy. She located and downloaded her prefered publications and made use of them the very next day. The search function enabled her to locate specific items very quickly. Needless to say, her coworkers were truly impressed.

After reading a preview chapter of a book, she decided to purchase it. We were out running errands at the time. She made the purchase right from the car. The book downloaded immediately. The whole transaction only took a few seconds. At that point I had seen enough. I purchased a second Kindle DX for myself. I use mine for pleasure reading. The Kindle definately enchances the reading experience. The screen is very pleasant to look at. This, as wall as being able to choose the font size allows reading for extended periods of time without fatigue. I'm reading more now that I ever have. I also subscribe to some weekly/monthly publications. They arrive wirelessly at no extra cost. Very convenient.

The build quality of these units is excellent. The controls have a positive feel. The battery life is amazing. I am confident I will enjoy many years of reading from my Kindle DX.
