I waited and watched other products get launched but in the end, I decided that the 2 most important features were available with the Kindle.
(1) Screen size: I wanted the largest screen possible since I wanted to use the ereader for reviewing PDF documents as well as books.
(2) Native PDF document capability: I am happy that this was added to the DX.
I bought mine after the Nook was announced, I had hoped that a more competitive product would be released. I am fond of Amazon for shopping in general so it would have been a bit challenging to get me to switch over to B&N for books.
Features and items that I'd like to see in the future are:
(a)More text books and academic books. I wish that I had the Kindle while in business school and that the text books were available as eBooks. Even though, I am done now, I like to reference and review things that would be easier to do if the books were available as eBooks. And I would love to trade the the text books in for eBook versions.
(b)Expansion of websites that I can navigate to in order to review my PDF documents.
(c) (Not possible in the current version but) speed up the processor so reading and replying to email is reasonable to do on the Kindle (Why not, there is a screen and a keyboard.)
(d) A future eReader that is child proof so that I can give one to each of my nephews in order to get them started with reading books and so that I can give them books throughout the year.

The best feature of the Kindle DX is that I could make the font size easy to read. Very portable especially on my travel.

The kindle forces you to use one click purchasing. If you use multiple cards (e.g. one for personal purchases and another for business purchases) you must log into your Amazon account and change the one click settings each time you want to use the other card. Even if you purchase online!
When I saw this happening, I canceled the purchase (15 seconds). The kindle said the purchase would be credited back against my account. When I got home and checked online I had been charged twice for the download.
This is the first negative experience I've ever had with Amazon. It actually made me feel sad.

I have enjoyed K2 and now the extraordinary Kindle DX. As of 10/09, this is the top-of-the-line kindle product. I truly love the reading experience, in particular the Sunday newspapers! How nice to have the papers waiting when you wake up!
I like the larger screen on the DX, you turn the page less frequently, and adjusting the font size on the larger screen could not be easier.
Though both the K2 and DX are easily portable, this unit is a bit heavier and (of course) larger. The ability to display PDF files (clearly) makes the the DX a good choice for business types, and students. There is also a bit of a "wow" factor with this item - it is the Corvette of the current e-readers. Yup, you WILL get noticed when you use this one.
In using the device, you will probably find that you read MORE, and perhaps re-discover books you have loved before. The ability to have newspapers , blog's and magazines at your disposal really will transform the way you process information -everytning is easier!
For those who say you can get material on a cell phone, PDA or netbook- well, yes, you COULD, but do you really ever plan on reading a book or newspaper that way, long term? The Kindle products mimic or enhance an actual traditional print reading experience. If you have not seen e-ink, you are missing out. The screen is not like a computer screen and light years away from any cell phone, I promise.
This seems to be the season for e-readers ( as I write this there is an ad for a competing brand on the TV during an NFL pre game show..). I am aware of another retailer promoting a similar product due to launch in the next 30 days or so. There is probably room in the marketplace for several brands- but why not go for the best?
( I sort of feel that Kindle is a bit like TiVo - you can buy a DVR, or you can get the real deal, the top brand, best-in-class.).
I do hope this helps a bit. It can be a tough decision to select any electronic device- none of them are inexpensive. In my opinion, this is not only the first, but the best line of products out there. I really enjoy the DX and it's screen size.
My whole family (across several states) have enjoyed the Kindle products, but none as much as my Mom who was an avid reader, until macular degeneration robbed her of a lifelong passion. The text-to-speech function on Kindle 2 and Kindle DX has allowed her to re-connect with ease, and has empowered her. That alone, is priceless.

I gave this item as a gift to my daughter-in-law. She has a vision problem and thus cannot read small print, though she loves to read and is especially fond of classics. I chose the larger Kindle to improve her ability to increase the font size effectively. She has reported very enthusiastically about the Kindle DX so far.
